Battery grips are specifically designed for SLRs and DSLRs. They provide almost twice the shooting time of normal cameras. They have built-in battery cases that can house several battery packs in case you need to pack in a lot of power for extended shooting. Battery grips have sturdy bases meant for holding heavier cameras. They also have extra holders for external flashes and longer zoom lenses. They stabilize the hand and allow for vertical and horizontal shooting. Battery grips come in different sizes depending on the camera they are made for. Horizontal battery grips Horizontal battery grips may be mounted underneath the base of SLRs and DSLRs. They can run on several alkaline, NiCad, Li, or LiIon batteries. They are typically made of magnesium alloy, making them very lightweight, usually less than just a pound heavy. Some horizontal battery grips have rubber bases for extra grip. They come with control dials, AEL buttons, AF buttons, a tripod socket, and a grip sensor. Vertical battery grips Just like horizontal types, vertical battery grips may be made of magnesium alloy and are commonly mounted underneath the base of SLRs and DSLRs. When powered by several alkaline, NiCad, Li, or LiIon batteries, they can provide twice the shooting time of normal batteries. They come with vertical shutters for easier horizontal or vertical shooting. They also come with an extended vertical body to support heavier cameras with external flash systems. Vertical battery grips have other controls including a main control dial, AE lock, AF trigger, light compensation button, and shot selector button. When choosing vertical battery grips, you should keep in mind several things: Fit: Choose battery grips that are compatible with your camera. Check your camera’s product manual to determine the right battery grip. Choose a battery grip from the same manufacturer of your camera for the proper fit. Check your SLRs and DSLRs for mounting capabilities before buying battery grips. Battery type: Choose battery grips that will fit the batteries used in your cameras. Consider battery grips that have several holders for different rechargeable or disposable batteries to extend your camera’s shooting time up to two times your battery pack’s shooting power. |
