Guide to Speaker Boxes

Speaker Boxe : What is it?

SpeakerBoxes1

A speaker box is an enclosure that contains a speaker, particularly a woofer. It helps control sound and provides better amplification. It can also be used for containing a tweeter and a midrange (together with a woofer).

Kinds of Speaker Boxes include the following:

Sealed speaker box

  • A sealed speaker box is a direct-radiator system that provides a broad range of sound with little distortion and deviation.
  • Its rear driver is in a sealed enclosure, making the rear output noncontributory to the total sound output.
  • Depending on the stiffness and tightness of the enclosure, it can come as an Infinite Baffle enclosure (larger; mechanical suspension dominates) or and Acoustic Suspension enclosure (smaller; air in the box dominates).

Speaker box with a vented enclosure

  • A speaker box with a vented enclosure features a port or aperture.
  • The rear output of the cone allows the rear driver to contribute to the total sound output. Its contribution, however, involves a very narrow range of frequency only.
  • Examples include ported, passive radiator, and bass reflex.
  • At certain frequencies, it can be more efficient than a sealed box system provided it has the same size and bass cutoff frequency.

Bandpass speaker box

  • A bandpass speaker box has at least two enclosures: one at the rear of the driver and one in front.
  • The front enclosure is like a vented box that acts as a low pass filter. It can be used as an effective acoustic crossover that filters out mechanical noises produced by the woofer.
  • It narrows the system's bandwidth, making it more efficient.

Coupled cavity speaker box

  • A coupled cavity speaker box combines the features of the bandpass and the vented system.
  • It consists of two or more enclosures, each coupled by a vent.
  • Each vent and enclosure is a resonant system, making it a high order, multituned resonant system.
  • It has a complex response.
  • It is more difficult to design

Choosing Speaker Boxes (Buying Tips)

Materials used: Choose a speaker box made of a stiff material that makes it stable enough to withstand variations in air pressure.  It should be damped well so it can come back to its original position without resonating.

Frequency: Choose a supersonic speaker box with a very high resonant frequency to prevent it from resonating to a low frequency box air pressure.
