Guide to Playpens

Playpen : What is it?

playpen1

Playpens – also known as play yards – are used to contain babies when they play to keep them safe and secure in one place. Traditional playpens are made of wood. They are enclosed by railings approximately 50 centimeters in height, making it difficult or almost impossible for babies to climb out of them. They can be collapsible for easy storage and transport.

To avoid accidents with playpens, do not leave objects or toys inside the playpen. The baby can use them to climb over the sides and cause the playpen to tip over. In a damaged playpen or one with rails that do not lock properly anymore, do not leave the baby unattended inside as he or she can easily get out of it. Moreover, avoid placing too much padding, blankets, and pillows inside the playpen, as they can suffocate the baby.

Kinds of Playpens include the following:

Wooden Playpens

Wooden Playpens are made of solid and durable wood. They are heavy and stable. They have vertical wooden bars that provide a great view and back support. These bars also help babies pull themselves up into a standing position. Wooden play yards are available in different finishes to match the other furniture in the house. They can be built with teething rails that babies in the teething stage can bit on.

Mesh-sided Playpens

Typical Mesh-sided Playpens are made of metal tube frames and nylon mesh sides. They have soft sides and floors that cannot cause injuries to babies. Hinged sides allow the floor panels to be folded in different ways, making them easy to store and transport.

Mesh playpens traditionally are usually rectangular or square, but they can also come in other shapes. The more expensive models are padded with thick foam for added comfort and protection.

Choosing Playpens (Buying Tips)

Weight: Choose a heavy and durable playpen. A lightweight one can easily tilt or tip over if your baby leans against one side.

Sidebars: If you intend to buy a playpen with sidebars, make sure the space between them does not exceed eight-and-a-half centimeters. If the space is too large, it would be easy for any of your baby’s body parts to be stuck between the sidebars.
