  • Amazon.com Hands-On Review

Somewhere around four or five months, babies start to tune in more intently to the world around them. Meanwhile, those leg muscles just keep developing. Suddenly, lying around on a mat or sitting in a bouncy seat just doesn’t cut it anymore. The Evenflo Classic Johnny Jump Up is, indeed, a classic. Your bouncing baby boy (or girl) will truly start bouncing! Who says exercise can’t be fun? Just slide baby into the padded seat, making sure only his toes can touch the floor. He will immediately sense the spring action and start pushing off with his toes. Instant entertainment!

    Build on Baby’s Milestones
In addition to being a source of exercise and almost endless amusement, the Johnny Jump Up also contributes to the development of several important milestones.

    Gross Motor Skills
The legs are pumping, the arms are waving, the head is bobbing…baby doesn’t know it, but he’s working on his gross motor skills. Figuring out how to use those large muscles, then practicing and building their strength, is a key step in baby’s development. Next thing you know, he’ll be running and jumping and throwing balls!

    Cause and Effect
"Hey, when I push down on the floor, I bounce! Let’s see what happens when I push this way…or that…?" Okay, the Johnny Jump Up won’t get your kid speaking full sentences, or even his first word (unless it’s "Wheee!"), but this is the gist of his thought patterns once he settles into the seat. Cause and effect is a nifty concept that your child will experiment with for the rest of his life, from dropping food off the high chair tray (gravity!) to seeing what happens when he grabs a toy from his friend (she doesn’t like that!) to discovering whether his parents really mean it when they say his high school curfew is 10:00 p.m. (oops! They do.).

    Balance and Coordination
Being upright must feel strange at first to someone who has spent the first few months of life lying in someone’s arms or in a crib. It’s going to take some work to figure out how to keep upright (although the Johnny Jump Up won’t let him flop over, of course) and going in the direction he wants to go. He’s going to have to find the floor with his toes, push away, then find it again and again, all the while keeping his torso strong. Whether the Johnny Jump Up is springing up and down or front to back or side to side, baby will go along with it, keeping his balance all the while.

    Easy to Install
After assembling the seat and attaching the toy loops, pull open the clamp arms and hook them over any doorway trim that meets the size requirements (wall thickness must be 3 to 6 inches, and the flat surface on top of molding must be at least ½ inch—and firmly attached. Do take these measurements seriously!). Slide baby into the padded seat, and watch his face light up as he discovers he has the power to make this thing move!

    Important Note to Parents
Please don’t let baby spin, swing, or sleep in the Johnny Jump Up, and read the instructions and warnings very carefully before using. --Emilie Coulter

    Baby loves it - D. Gomes, May 10, 2008

The only thing that I had hard time with is getting baby in and out, the straps always seemed to be in the way, but other then that it has been a lifesaver. After trying the swing which he hated because he really couldn't do anything in it we were worried he wouldn't be to happy with the jumper but he loves it and will jump safely and quietly while we run around getting done much needed chores.

    well worth it! - A. Spitznaugle, Mar 17, 2008

I got this because it so closely resembled the jumparoo that I played in for hours when I was a baby. It's a classic design that still works today! I love that I can take it down and store it in a very small space when it is not being used, and it is easily washable (important if you have a "happy spitter" like my son). Two caveats: first, if you have a petite or preemie baby you will need to use a thin blanket or towel to help fill in the seat and make it comfortable for him (our son was 11 pounds and 5.5 months old in thE pictureS I attached). Second, make sure that you have ledges over the top of whatever hall entrance or door you plan to use this on. I wasn't careful about checking this when I bought the item, and unfortunately there is only one arch that this will work in, all other doorways don't have enough room between the top of the door edging and the ceiling to place the hefty clamps that keep this jumper up and safe. HAPPY JUMPING!

    It's just ok... - heather82005, Feb 05, 2008

The spring is very tight and the main support strap rubs noisily on the plastic protective spring-covering which, in my opinion, is poor design. My son had a little trouble actually bouncing because the spring is so tight. This jumper is just ok. He did like being in it for short periods of time and liked dangling and spinning around in it, but we like our Jumperoo a lot better.

    Great jumper - Stacie, Jan 20, 2008

This item is used daily in my household. Once inside my daughter typically remains content for about 30 min. This item is so safe that I use it as my babysitter during my morning shower. It is easy to adjust and very secure, all you need is a door jam. I highly recommend this jumper, nice and simple.

    Johnny Jumper - R. Brammall, Jan 08, 2008

Iwas unable to use the Johnny Jumper, as the infant it was intended for exceeded the weight limitation.
