Guide to Leather Belts

Leather Belt : What is it?

LeatherBelts1

Leather belts are usually made from treated cowhide or other animal skins. They are the most common type of belt and may be worn by men or women. They usually come in black or brown shades, but may also be dyed in different colors. Most leather belts fit under pant loops and are secured with tang buckles.

Kinds of Leather Belts include the following:

Full-grain leather belts

Full-grain leather belts are not sanded, allowing them to retain their natural grain for better fiber strength and durability. They are naturally breathable and comfortable, making them ideal for snug-fitting pants. They wear out better than other types of leather and develop a dark shade, called a patina, over the years.

Corrected-grain leather belts

Corrected-grain leather belts have had the hair and natural grain removed and replaced with an artificial grain. The treated side is smooth and polished, while the back is dull and fuzzy. They are usually heavily painted to conceal the sanding and stamping marks.

Suede belts

Suede belts are made from the inner layers of a split animal hide. They are cheaper than other leathers because several belts may be made from a single piece of hide. They are fuzzy on both sides, but are sometimes treated to smooth out one side and achieve the look of full-grain leather.

Choosing Leather Belts (Buying Tips)

Length. Choose a leather belt that is long enough to fit around your waist, leaving a few inches for buckling. There should be at least three inches of allowance for the belt buckle for a more secure fit. If your belt has a clasp instead of a buckle, allow about five inches to hold the belt in case the clasp breaks.

Treatment. Choose a leather belt that has undergone minimum treatment. Avoid heavily dyed belts because they tend to fade over time and may be hard to restore. Look for one with sufficient grain to protect against tearing and fraying.
