Buying organic food on a budget

The common perception is that when it is organic, it must be expensive. Some people do want to eat organic food, but the cost is what keeps them from doing so especially on an everyday basis. They prefer to buy the commercially grown food in nearby grocery stores because they are sold a lot cheaper than the organic food in the specialty sections. While this is true, there are still a number of ways for you to save money when buying organic food.

Buy local

Look for local groceries that sell or consign local produce grown in your community. They are not as expensive as those with big brand names that have been transported from far off places.  You can also check out the local farms and buy from them directly. This can significantly reduce the cost of your organic groceries.

Skim your list

Stick to the basics. Skip the organic items that are not that beneficial or you think you do not really need. Organic food that should remain in the must-buy list includes vegetables and fruits such as spinach, celery, peppers, apples, strawberries, and cherries. Other organic essentials include poultry, eggs, dairy, and meat. Skip the seafood. Organic food is flavorful enough, so you do not need to buy that much seasonings.

Buy in bulk

If your budget allows it, buy in bulk and stock up to lessen costs. This is a good technique for must-have commodities such as coffee, chocolate, flour, and milk.  Make sure to check their shelf-life and expiration date. You can use your freezer to store vegetables and meat in bulk.

Build meals around lower-cost items

Check out the Internet or the bookstore for recipes featuring lower-cost organic food items such as beans and grains. Avoid making meals that call for high-cost organic food like cheese and meat.  Cook foods using vegetables in season so you can buy them cheap. If you can manage it, grow an organic herb garden so you do not have to buy the basic necessities like garlic, herbs, and spices.
