Digitizer tablets are used to draw freehand images directly onto the computer. They are similar to the touch screens used in tablet PCs, but usually have a blank screen and are more pressure-sensitive. The user draws directly on the tablet using a stylus and a puck, a pointing device featuring up to 16 control buttons for adjusting image attributes. The drawing does not appear on the tablet itself, but on the computer screen. In most models, thicker lines are achieved by increasing the pressure of each stroke. High-end tablets have more realistic drawing features, such as ink drips and paint splatters.
Footprint: Footprint refers to the actual drawing size, which is often four to five inches bigger than the tablet itself. Choose a tablet with a large relative footprint to achieve maximum resolution while keeping a comfortable drawing area.
Screen format: Choose a graphics tablet that matches your monitor’s aspect ratio. Most models are designed for traditional 4:3 monitors, but these can distort images when used on newer formats. Look for a wide-screen format tablet if you use a wide-screen or dual monitor.
