A DVD recorder copies data from various sources onto a blank DVD. It usually consists of a retracting disc tray and a read/write head, which uses laser beams to write data onto the DVD. Most models can also function as regular DVD drives for playing DVD movies. It is also backward-compatible, which means that it can read and write older formats such as CDs.
An internal DVD burner is installed in a drive bay inside the computer case. It is available in different burning speeds ranging from 1X to 18X. Most models can also read CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
External DVD burner
An external DVD burner is housed in an external case that plugs into a peripheral port. It has an average reading speed of 24X for CD-Rs/RWs and 18X for DVD-R/RWs. It is commonly used with laptops, tablet PCs, and other portable computers.
