Guide to Ergonomic Mouse

Ergonomic Mouse : What is it?

ErgonomicMouses1

Ergonomic mice are designed to prevent hand strain by keeping the hand and wrist in a comfortable position. They are specially shaped to fit the hand’s natural curve, and their buttons are arranged so that the fingers rest naturally over each button. Some models specifically target wrist and forearm twist, the main cause of repetitive-stress injury in heavy computer users. Other common features include finger grooves, soft buttons, and thumb-controlled scroll wheels.

Kinds of Ergonomic Mouses include the following:

Horizontal mice

  • Horizontal ergonomic mice have a wide, flat base and a slightly dome-shaped body.
  • They are gripped with the palm facing downward and moved by sliding them across a smooth surface.
  • The buttons are located on the top, so that the index and middle fingers rest on each button. A scroll wheel may also be included between the buttons or on the side.

Vertical mice

  • Vertical mice have a stable base and an upright body measuring about three inches from the base.
  • They are held with the hand turned sideways and the fingers curled around the side, as if doing a handshake.
  • The buttons are located along one side, sometimes including a thumb button for scrolling.

Choosing Ergonomic Mouse (Buying Tips)

Resolution: Choose an ergonomic mouse with a resolution of at least 350 dots per inch (dpi) for fast, smooth cursor movement. If you frequently play video games on your computer, you may want a resolution of 1000 dpi or higher to keep up with fast-moving graphics.

Size: Choose an ergonomic mouse that fits comfortably into your hand. Small mice can be hard to grip and cause hand stress, while oversized ones require more arm movement to operate. Look for one with large, grooved buttons to better fit the curve of your fingers.
