Ethernet PMCs are printed circuit boards containing connection ports for Ethernet cables. They allow computers to support one or more connections in a format supported by the PCI slots in most computers. They are measure 74 by 149 millimeters and fit between two cards in a standard card rack.
Combo cards have three ports for 10BaseT (twisted pair cables), bayonet or thin network cables, and attachment unit interface (AUI or thick ethernet cables).
They are recommended for networks using both twisted pair and thin Ethernet cables.
Coax cards
Coax cards have two ports, one for thin BNC and one for thick AUI cables.
They work only with specific connection types and are hard to move to different locations.
10BaseT cards
10BaseT cards have an AUI port and an RJ-45 port supporting twisted pair cables.
They can be used with media converters or AUI-RJ-45 transceivers to improve connection compatibility.
Software support: Make sure the Ethernet PCM comes with appropriate drivers for your operating system and the network services you want to access. If you are installing in a DOS system, look for one with at least an ODI and NDis 2.x and 3.x drivers. LAN servers usually require additional drivers.
Cooling system: Choose an Ethernet PCM that works with air-cooled and conduction-cooled systems. Check the cooling system used in your PCI rack and look for a compatible PCM model.
