A floppy disk drive reads and writes on removable floppy disks. It fits into a smaller drive bay, smaller than the It is one of the oldest forms of computer disks, and is largely being replaced by higher-capacity media such as Zip drives and USB flash drives. The basic floppy drive has a spindle clamping mechanism that holds the disk in place, one or two magnetic read/write heads, and a sensor that detects the rotational position of the diskette. Most “modern” floppy disk drives are made for the standard 3.5-inch floppy disks.
Kinds of Floppy Disk Drives include the following:
Internal floppy disk drive
An internal floppy disk drive is built into a drive bay in the CPU case, usually below the hard disk and CD drive bays. It connects to the motherboard and power supply using flat ribbon cables. It can only be removed by removing the casing of the CPU.
External floppy disk drive
An external floppy disk drive comes is housed in a separate box that plugs into the computer’s USB or FireWire port. It is commonly used in laptops, tablet PCs, and other portable computers.
Speed: Choose a floppy disk drive with a high read/write speed if you frequently save large documents or photos.
Interface: For internal drives, look for one that uses SCSI cables instead of IDE for faster transfers. SCSI cables can be identified by their smaller width compared to IDEs. For external drives, choose a FireWire interface because it transfers faster than USB.
