Guide to KVM Switches

KVM Switche : What is it?

kvmswitch1

A keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch allows users to control multiple computers using a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse. It contains ports for connecting all three devices, and connects to the computers using special cables. It also has buttons for switching from one computer to another at any given time. It passes the signals between the keyboard, monitor, mouse, and the computer currently selected.

A KVM switch can handle two to 60 computers, depending on the model.  Some models can be daisy-chained to further expand the network.  A KVM switch is typically used in data centers where multiple servers are placed in one rack.

Kinds of KVM Switches include the following:

Analog KVM switch

An analog KVM switch is transparent to BIOS/OS. It has plug-and-play installation, which allows it to function without using driver software.  It has 2/4/8/16/24/32/64 input ports for connecting to all computer nodes and 1/2/4 output ports for connecting to a master node.

Digital KVM switch

A digital KVM switch connects to the computers via an Internet Protocol (IP) connection. It is also called a KVM over IP switch. It includes a CPU, an embedded operating system, RAM for the operating system, one network port, NVRAM for the settings/configuration, and several KVM ports.

Advanced KVM switch

An advanced KVM switch uses a paired Cat-5 cable and a dongle. It replaces the traditional thick KVM cable. The output is connected to the network connector while the KVM port of a computer node is connected to the input.

Choosing KVM Switches (Buying Tips)

Switch: Choose a KVM switch that allows the control to be switched to keyboard commands for more convenience.

Peripheral emulation: Look for a KVM switch that provides peripheral emulation, allowing it to send signals to the computers not currently selected to let them know that the keyboard, monitor, and mouse are still connected.
