Media Center : What is it?

A media center is a computer designed to handle multimedia files such as movies, music, pictures, and games. It usually has a large hard drive for storing large files and a high-resolution screen for viewing images and videos. It usually comes in a small case for easy transport and storage. Most models come with a television tuner card and a receiver, allowing them to function as regular TVs. It usually has the capability to receive, store, and playback digital media through standard television or hi-fi. It also allows general computer functions such as word processing and web browsing.

Kinds of Media Centers include the following:

Pocket-sized media center

This media center is a handheld device designed to import media files from a laptop or desktop computer. It usually has a small LCD screen at the center and various playback controls on the side. It connects to the computer through the USB 2.0 of FireWire port.  

Laptop media center

A laptop media center combines the features of a media center and a regular computer. It includes a keyboard, touch pad, and a larger screen measuring 10 to 20 inches. It can be folded up and locked for transport.

Choosing Media Centers (Buying Tips)

Import options:  Choose a media center with several connection ports for importing from different sources. Look for one that allows direct import from digital cameras, video cameras, and music players.

Capacity:  Choose a media center with a high storage capacity to store large volumes of media files. A 20 GB hard disk can store about 320 MP3 files and 35 hours of video at VCD/MPEG-1 quality. 

Expansion slot: Look for a media center with one or more expansion slots to allow you to add storage space or install additional sound or graphics cards.  

Screen: Choose a media center with a high-resolution screen to provide maximum image quality.
