A network adapter, also called a network card, allows computers to communicate within a local network. It is both an OSI layer 1 (physical layer) and a data link layer 2 device, which allows physical access to a networking medium. It allows computers to connect together through a cabling system or a wireless connection. It uses MAC addresses to provide a low-level addressing system.
A traditional PCI adapter is a printed circuit board that plugs into the PCI expansion rack. It commonly used with desktop computers.
PCMCIA network adapter

Home network kit: To save on money and ensure compatibility, choose a home network kit (a network adapter bundled together with a computer router) when buying networking equipment instead of a separate device.
Standard: Choose a network adapter that supports the same standard as your Ethernet or wireless network.
