Optical computer mice use light beams to follow the pointer’s movement on a computer screen. They work by taking snapshots of the working surface and generating movement data from irregularities in the surface. This process requires no moving parts, unlike mechanical ball mice where a rotating ball provides the movement. Optical mice also have higher resolutions, ranging from 360 to 2000 dots per inch (dpi), and can map an entire screen on four centimeters of desk space.
Standby mode: Choose an optical mouse with a standby mode to save power when not in use. This feature switches to a low-light mode when no movement is detected for a given period. If you will use the mouse for gaming, look for one with programmable standby time to keep the mouse active when you use other game controllers. Resolution: Choose an optical mouse with a resolution of at least 1,000 dpi for heavy applications, such as gaming and graphic design. For general computer use, 360 dpi is usually more than enough.
