Print Server : What is it?

printserver1

Print servers connect one or more printers and allow them to perform printing jobs from multiple computers. They store several print jobs in a queue and send them to the specified printer for processing. They usually have several ports for connecting to printers, computers, or network devices such as Ethernet hubs or switches.

Kinds of Print Servers include the following:

File-server based print servers

File-server based print servers connect printers to the serial or printer port of the file server. They can connect 16 to 255 printers. They are ideal for large offices and large computer networks.

Nondedicated workstation print servers

These print servers have an onboard memory, which sends the print job to a file server for processing. They can perform printing jobs while computer applications are running simultaneously. They are also called workstation-based print servers. They connect printers through parallel or serial workstation ports.

Dedicated print servers

Dedicated print servers connect only to specific computers identified by a bindery ID. They connect to computers through parallel or serial workstation ports. They can serve up to 16 printers.

Box print servers

Box print servers are complete workstations designed solely for multiple printing. They connect printers through parallel or serial ports. They can connect up to six printers.

Net direct print servers

Net direct print servers use specific software and network adapters to perform multiple print jobs.  They are usually made for specific printer models.

Choosing Print Servers (Buying Tips)

Connectivity: Choose a print server with both a USB and a parallel port to connect to most printer interfaces. Look for one that supports plug-and-play operation to use the server with different computers without installing driver software on each unit.

Compatibility: For smooth operation, make sure your printer's model and make and your computer's operating system can support your print server.
