Rating : Love it! - B. Clark, Dec 20, 2009
I bought this probably a year ago for my part time videography business and it is still going strong. I use it almost exclusively to print on the surface of DVDs and CDs. The printed discs turn out looking professionally done. I'm happy with the results.
Rating : Blue eyes look grey - Heather L. www.everythingunderthemoon.net, Jul 11, 2009
The printer works fine. But the color isn't right. When I print pictures of people with blue eyes, the blue is a muddy grey color. I am disappointed since the whole point of the printer is to print photos.
Rating : Worked for a little while - Apple Scruff, Feb 24, 2009
This printer did work well once for photos. As soon as the ink ran out (which was after only a few prints) I replaced it an it never worked well again. I've run many "tests" where the thing prints the bars to see if the head needs replacing, and after printing 6 of them and cleaning the heads 6 times, I'm all out of yellow ink! The thing wont let you print anything if you are out of any one of the 6 or so inks, even if you don't need that color. I am now reluctant to spend 30-40 dollars on new ink because I'm not sure if it will work or not! If you want to print photos, use snapfish or something. Or another photo printer. If I were paid for the amount of time I have spent trying to get this thing to work again, I'd be able to buy a way better printer than this one!
Rating : If You Make DVDs, You Need This Printer - Paul Curran, Jan 11, 2009
I use this printer primarily for printing DVDs. I do video projects that require me to kick out 25-50 DVDs at a time. This printer, along with the Epson provided software, easily prints high quality images on the face of printable DVDs. The software comes with stock backgrounds that are adaptable to a number of themes, like flowers for a wedding DVD, or Santa for a Christmas DVD.
Ink is expensive - $65 for a full set of cartridges. I recommend staying with the Epson OEM cartridges. Experience with other cartridges left blobs of ink on my DVDs.
I've printed over 300 DVDs with this unit, and it keeps plugging along.
Another great feature is the USB 2.0 card reader that fits a lot of different types of media. My only gripe with the cardreader is that it WON'T FUNCTION IF YOU ARE OUT OF INK! So, you must buy ink to keep the card reader working.
Photo prints come out fast and are great quality. You can also print direct from a memory card. I shot photos at a school dance and printed pictures on the spot for students without having a computer hooked up.
You can also connect a bluetooth module and print from bluetooth equipped printers and devices. I've even printed pictures from my cell phone direct to the R380.
After using this product for a while, I dubbed it one of my best buys for all of 2008 - a must have for someone in video production, or for someone that distributes DVD or CD media to others.
Rating : Inks and CD tray Sticking - Barnacle, Jun 07, 2008
First the ink usage is absolutely the worst I have ever seen. It is really not the amount of ink it uses but the minuscule amount of ink that Epson loads in the cartridges. This problem is easily solved by using 3rd party inks and spongless refillable self resetting cartridges or even external ink tanks. This system will cost you approx. $50 but will save you that much in your first refill. Each spongless cartridge holds about 5 times the ink that is in an Epson cartridge and costs Penney's to fill. That said there is now a caveat to this -----The colors will not be as good as the Epson ink. This issue is 85% solved by profiling the new inks and this is time consuming but only needs to be done one time. I did not re-profile because I am not printing to resell and do not really care if the colors are a bit off.
Second issue which removed a star from my vote is that after printing a couple hundred CDs I started getting a paper jam error and had to restart the printer wasting more ink and time. I almost threw out the printer but then noticed slight wear marks on the bottom of the CD tray and it was very smooth. I slightly wet a rag with MEK [ Methyl Ethyl Keytone ] available from Home Depot and wiped the bottom of the tray to create a fresh surface for the rollers to work against and now everything is perfect again. Great little printer and I would buy another.
