Caution! Cool TV tuner runs HOT! - Mark F. Braun, Oct 17, 2009

Elgato's eyeTV turbo has a nice Tivo-like schedule and many of Tivo's bell s and whistles, and so far, free, but I there will be a charge after a year: TV GUIDE for $20 and worth it, BUT...

This one got shipped back because it ran way, way too hot and not a good thing for my prized laptop! I'll revise this as it gets fixed, replaced or whatever.

The good: Works with cable and over-the-air antenna. Found a lot of channels! Nice channel guide.
The bad: HOT HOT HOT!

The 2009 model has more: an FM tuner and should be safe to operate without the heat. Hope so!

Product works pretty good~ cool idea, but most people don't need - Bradely Pitts, Aug 06, 2009

The EyeTV works great, and its software does too (though can be confusing to figure out for the first time). Took me HOURS to figure out how to get my cable hooked up to the computer with this. Could have better instructions. And you've gotta constantly be plugged into the cable, unless you have massive memory stores to spare. Not bad, not what I thought It'd be. Don't get unless you REALLY have a reason to watch TV on your Mac...

So far so good - SL, May 03, 2009

Bought the EyeTV Hybrid at the suggestion of a few people, so far i am fairly please with the interface and with the device. I am disappointed that it does not come with a portable antenna as some other products do.

I have not yet scheduled a recording, but I have connected cable and an HD antenna to it to test the results. I use a Mac Mini [Leopard10.5.6 Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz 4GB Ram Intel GMA950 Built in] which is not ideal for watching live HD. My mini cannot handle taking in, recording, and outputting HD video at the same time because of the built in graphics card. I get the best results when recording HD, then playing back later. The specs on the 09 Mini look a lot better and may yield better results.

It gets hot with several hours of use and the free TV Guide subscription does not have the correct channels listed for my area. I have yet to test device with a Composite or S-Video input.

Eye TV Hybrid - RK Racketeer, Apr 10, 2009

This is a very good product, works as advertised. I bought an iMac for the kitchen, my wife had our TV side by side with the unit, it was a waste of space since I knew we could watch TV on the iMac. The EyeTV did the trick, HD broadcasts look great!. I have 2 somewhat minor complaints: 1. The cable box did not look good, so i removed it all together. We receive the network HD channels over the cable, we've lost the special HD channels from the cable box, but that is fine since this is not the primary TV, 2. You cannot watch a different program while watching another.

Would recommend this product to others.
