Exceptionally poor audio quality - Walk'n and Talk'n, Nov 07, 2009

I like the Logitec Orbit AF webcam. However, I DO NOT LIKE the audio quality. You need to set the mic setting to almost nothing and practically whisper to have the audio come out without a very bad scratch noise interfering with everything you say.

I am using mine with a laptop. I have positioned the cam everywhere to try to stop the distortion in the audio - without success.

I returned my first one thinking it was a bad unit. The replacement does the same thing.

I found to set the mic level to almost nothing and then talk softly to get most of the scratch noise eliminated - but not all.

I tested making videos by muting the webcam's mic and then using my computer's built-in mics with success - no noise.

I successfully tested making a video using a headset (phones and mic), that I often use for private Skype calls. The video's audio came out just fine.

I tested using a very cheap mic from WallyWorld. The video audio was fine.

SO, the problem seems clearly to be the mic built into the Logitech Orbit AF webcam.

Still the Best Webcam. Excellent Picture Quality - Adam, Nov 02, 2009

I recently bought the Logitech Orbit AF webcam and the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema Webcam. I compared them heavily. I first bought the Orbit AF, then I read good things about the LifeCam Cinema HD from Microsoft. SO.... I ran out and picked one up to compare, thinking that I would return the one i did not like. The Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD's marketing makes it sound like its 1280x720 at 30fps. This is not the case. It is only 1280x720 at 15fps and the quality of that camera is disgusting compared to the Orbit AF. I expected something along the optics of an HD FLIP, but the LifeCam Cinema wasnt even close. The Logitech Orbit AF, at 800x600 30fps has more per pixel resolution (clarity and definition) than the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD does at 1280x720.

The Orbit AF really has great optics for a webcam.

I really wanted a 1280x720 30fps HD webcam, but it appears none truly exist yet. Sure Microsoft claims their LifeCam Cinema HD is 720, but, the image quality is so poor, so blotchy, that it looks like a low res picture has been up scaled to 1280x720. In other words the image quality does not look sharp and clear like you would expect. Its really poor quality.

So The Orbit AF is staying on my desk, and the lifecam cinema is going back. Hopefully we will see real 1280x720 30fps web cams soon with high quality optics as soon as USB 3 is more available. Until then... This is the best you can get.

AND the motorized panning/face tracking DOES work. Its not perfect, but it works 99% of the time. Another quality logitech product. Sometimes they screw up (like the G7 mouse)... but most of the time... Logitech makes quality stuff.

Save your money - John M. Hill Jr., Oct 30, 2009

This "high end" unit hasn't worked well since the day I bought it! I have a intel web cam, worth half as much, that has a better picture! I wouldn't recommend buying one of these!

Phenomenal webcam - Patrick C. Pleter, Oct 25, 2009

As long as I was in the market for a new webcam, I might as well of bought the sleekest-looking one out there. Turns out the Orbit AF was a great buy; it out-preforms any camera in terms of picture quality, it has great (and working) features (also other free, downloadable ones), and the "follow you around" function is, for me, quite functional and fun to work with. The microphone is not the best; it wouldn't outdo a separate USB mike, but it isn't -- for a webcam mike -- bad, by any means. I love this webcam, and I highly recommend it, providing you want quality. :3

Not Perfect, but still great. - David J. Dearing, Oct 22, 2009

The face-tracking is a little quirky at times. Auto-focus in low light doesn't work too well. I wish I could turn off the indicator light. Other than these, I'm still glad I got it, it is the best cam I've used thus far. No more echo audio in video chat is worth it all....finally.
