Rating : RootsMagic Software - Jobar, Sep 14, 2009
I have been using the RootsMagic Family Tree Genealogy software for about a month and I really love it. I have been entering family information that I have gathered throughout the years into the program and it is very user friendly and I love the fact that you can upload pictures and other written data into the program. The reports are also very easy to use and I have been e-mailing these to family members to have them proof and add additional information so they can send it back for me to enter into the program. I would recommend this program to anyone who is interested in tracing their ancestors.
Rating : Buy ANY OTHER program..but not RM - Alaskan Princess, May 14, 2009
I spent quite a bit of time reseraching genealogy programs before deciding which one to purchase. Unfortunately, most software no longer includes written instructions but that's particularly frustrating with 'specialty' type s/w like this.
If you're in the market for genealogy software buy ANYTHING but RM. Version 4 was recently released and that's the version I purchased. One of the 'pluses' is supposed to be access to online help forum. If you use gmail (or like 'free' email accounts) RM will NOT allow you to register & participate in their forums. They'll sure accept that email address when you order & pay for product. I sent an email about registration issues (at least a week ago) and RM has opted to ignore me. At that point, I was going to return the product for a refund; then thought I'd already started entering data so... what the heck.
Next issue: I was sent family tree in both FTM and gedcom formats. RM claims ability to import both. When I imported gedcom format, it imported only dates, and excluded all comments. When I imported (same file, mind you) in FTM format, it included comments and dates. (I have no way of knowing if I've been able to access all original info in file, due to these import problems.) Again, I compared programs - still figured, what the heck, I'm not happy with this program, but I'll bite the bullet. None of the programs have 100% of what I want in a program (at least according to comparison charts I've viewed.)
Well - now that I've entered almost 300 names (in one line) it's become obvious I HAVE to return this and start over. I'm just sick over the wasted time and energy. And the confusion this has created. When you enter place of event (city, county, state, country) RM will 'standardize' for you - except that it doesn't enter the 'standardized' location in that field. Why bother?? WORSE is that it's CHANGING data after I've entered it. I don't know how to briefly explain this - let's say I entered place of birth for one person as 'Scariff Ireland'; RM told me the 'standardized' way to reference this location, but did NOT use the standardization in entry for that person. I continued entering data, and went back in to edit a differnt individual (due to having acquired more information) - it had changed that person's place of birth from Creeton, England to Scariff, Ireland. I initially thought perhaps I'd made editing errors - until I discovered RM has made (incorrect) changes in data for multiple people and entries. I also noticed it changing dates - I entered marriage date for one individual - it transferred that date to another individual. (Again, I thought perhaps I'd made the error.) After encountering this numerous times, I realized it's not me making data entry errors - RootsMagic is somehow transferring data entered for one individual to other individuals. (I'm working with hard copies of data - and after entering into RM fields, would highlight data after comparing to what was on RM screen - proof reading each screen before I closed it.)
Between the files I've imported and entries I've made - probably 1000+ entries are now all potentially corrupted. I've concluded it will be easier to just start over - with a DIFFERENT program. I purchased program direct from RM website; will be shocked if return process goes smoothly.
I rated this as a 1 - only because I couldn't rate it any lower. It doesn't even deserve a rating of 1.

I bought 2 of these just before Christmas '08. It's not even 3 months later and version 4 has just came out. You can test the beta for free, and that's what I advise.
This program is left-handed to use, and is missing standard necessary features...for instance...there is no military service breakdown feature. And while attaching photos and other multimedia isn't hard...just try to take it with you...!!! Hello rootsmagic people...this kind of data is very important to genealogy...and should I dare say...BASIC INFORMATION!!!
I bought 2, one for my sister, so that we could exchange gedcoms, etc. She bought Fam. Tree Maker a month later, and is much more pleased. I'm wanted to give the program more of a test drive, and remain stuck with this dud.
I'm not saying to buy Family Tree Maker or Legacy over this...just that you should try the version 4 beta for free, and see if their alleged new features will meet your basic research needs.
The fact that RootsMagic's tech support is limited to forum boards or snail mail queries should say it all. I wish someone said it to me before I parted with $60 + shipping for two copies.

Rating : Handy, lots of features - Mary, Jan 21, 2009
User-friendly! Easy to figure out how to start entering your family into a genealogical database. In addition, there are a lot of multimedia features: the ability to import pictures and scanned images to use as supporting or reference sources for your family's story.
Rating : Good Program - D. Cunningham, Nov 24, 2008
I had use an older program several years ago (Family Tree Maker) and this is much easier to use, or I'm just older and more literate. Anyway very good program.
