This product is compatible with the current generation of DOD CAC smart cards. I installed the reader on a HP laptop running Windows Vista, and it works great.
You must have some tech skills to be able to properly find and install the correct device drivers. The cardboard insert that comes with the reader contains some basic troubleshooting tasks, but lacks any instructions whatsoever to make the reader work.
In addition to this reader, you must download the device drivers [...]. Before you visit this site, make note of the model number you have (SCR3310). There is an option on the welcome page to select either English or German. Download these device drivers and then install them on your computer.
Next, install ActiveGold version 6.1 (as of Nov 2008) available on the Air Force portal {I assume the other military services have an equivalent}. Reboot your computer, and you should be able to access your base's webmail server (contact your local comm squadron for details).
Overall, it's a good product but lacks any sort of documentation to support it.

great reader that's a must for anybody wanting to use a CAC card on their home computer. the only improvement that I would make is to add some software, but in reality that would probably just jack up the price.

The item works with no problem, but it took a while to get it set up. No install disk was included, and the website listed on the instructions for downloading the driver was in German. It took a bit of searching to find the correct English-speaking website. Once I got the driver downloaded and installed, and had located the proper middleware for my CAC and installed that, the CAC reader worked without a problem. I've been using it for a few weeks at this point, and haven't had any problems.
