Product Description

Sony's new DVD burner incorporates new 8.5GB DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD+R Double Layer burning and dual format 4.7GB DVD burning. It has a maximum speed of 20x for DVD burning. That translates up to 27MB per second for really fast DVD copying. Double/Dual Layer discs let you store up to 8.5GB on a single DVD+R Double Layer or DVD-R Dual Layer disc, giving you plenty of room for more video and audio entertainment, digital photo archives, and information storage and the DRU-840A provides a faster speed of up to 12x burning or 16.2MB per second. DVD+R burning speed is a blazing 20X maximum, burning a full DVD in approximately 5 minutes.

Awesome burner - Slim, May 14, 2008

Fast, but not in-the-blink-of-an-eye fast. But so easy to install and immediately use. A Must purchase for PC owners. Don't know about Mac users but I'm sure it's just as easy.

Swapping the putty colored front panels it shipped with for the optional black panels -- which match the exterior color of more PC's nowadays -- was tough. Instructions were not as clear as they might have been, fit of parts was poor, and it took some real hand strength.

Other than that, no complaints. Installation instructions good; installation straight-forward; supplied software excellent (Made me made I had just paid money for complete Nero suite.); and disk burning performance top-rate.

I bought this DVD burner about a month ago and I have to say, it works great. Every piece of media I've thrown at it has been read from and written to without issues. It's very quiet when burning and, of course, very fast. I have yet to have one failed burn (except the one time I tried the "overburn" option on my burning program which supposedly allows you to burn a little extra data than the disc can handle, I don't know how it planned to accomplish this but it didn't work out in the end, maybe you need some kind of special media).

I'm using this on an Ubuntu Linux system (7.10 and then 8.04) (even though it says "Windows" all over the box, don't let that phase you if you're using Mac OS X, Linux, or any other operating system). I installed it internally into my Dell Dimension 8100 and it worked like a charm. Haven't tried it under Windows yet but I'm sure it works just as well.

Oh, and one thing I didn't notice when buying it is that it has an additional faceplate set, for those of you with a black case. The instructions for changing out the face plate were slightly incomprehensible, but I figured them out in the end.

Overall, I'm glad I payed the few extra dollars for a Sony. Their quality in computer components is still pretty damn good.

This is the drive for your no-nonsense optical drive needs before your jump to Blu-Ray technology. I've come to trust This flagship series of drives for years. I've owned the DRU-810 for four years of BRUTAL usage for DVD playback and mass-content burning with nary a hitch. And I have the confidence this drive here will give me my money's worth and then some.
The 840A drive I bought came with Nero 7 and I guess it was time to ditch Roxio Easy CD Creator. But obviously it is the purchaser's choice. So if you're here because your current drive has pooped out and are looking for a last DVD drive while waiting for Blu-Ray drives to reach negligibly affordable prices, this is it. Hassle-free installation and a great return in value.

This is one FAST and ACCURATE drive. I burn a lot of DVD's, and this drive just doesn't miss. So far, I am very pleased. A lot of bang for the buck!
