Warning - not the solution for the new Macbook Pro - David Fearon, Feb 06, 2009

Just a quick warning - this is not the adaptor for your new Macbook Pro firewire interface. I'm sure there is such an adaptor - I haven't found it yet. Maybe another kind reviewer will add a link here.

This Adapter Also Works With Laptop-To-External HD! - Donna Maher, Sep 27, 2008

I kept finding reviews that referred to i-Pods and digital cameras but I took my chances anyway, and thankfully, this little Startech IEEE 1394 4-6pin adapter did *exactly* what I wanted it to do.

I was able to connect a 6-pin firewire from my 500GB WD My Book external hard drive to my 4-pin Acer laptop port and have it function bilaterally with data transfer or anything else. I use this drive to store things and for backups and wanted to use the firewire port since all my USB ports were full.

Only one teensy qualification though, and that's allowing about 4" of space for how far the very stiff firewire cord sticks out (including the little Startech adapter itself) from the side of the laptop once it's plugged in.

I received it very quickly (as always from Amazon) and it was easy as pie to hook up - though it did take some fiddling to get it inserted into the laptop's port, but it worked splendidly!

Hope that helps someone who had the same problem with trying to hook up a new firewire WD HD to a too-small firewire port in your laptop computer.

Excellent product for converting from 6-pin connections found on most desktop computers and the 4-pin found on most laptop computers. I searched locally for a 4-pin to 4-pin cable to no avail. Most electronic stores I went into did not stock 4-pin/4-pin cables, only 4-pin/6-pin, so I ordered this unique adapter. I did think it was pricy for only one connector though. Originally, especially with the pic shown, it appears that you are getting two connectors which is what I anticipated. Wrong! There is only one adapter that comes with this item packaged. It works great though and can be used to connect your portable hard drive to a laptop especially if yours has the 4-pin connector like my Dell Inspirion 1526. Also, the 4-pin is essential for your connection of most Mini-DV Camcorders (4-pin) to your laptop computer which has 4-pin. Just insert cable into adapter, then the adapter into your laptop....and your in business ! The price isn't bad when you consider the alternative though...It Works !

The first time that I use the adapter, it worked for 2 min, and then get disconnected (I'm not sure if is my port), but I have a brand-new laptop.

The two firewire adapters I ordered came quickly and in excellent condition. I needed them to allow me to connect my IPOD and my wife's IPOD to our new notebooks that only had 4 pin firewire ports as the standard IPOD firewire cable is 6 pin.

The adapters worked as described with no problems. The product was built well, has a solid feel, and fits snugly on both ends.
