A Secure Digital (SD) card reader reads and transfers data from SD cards to a computer for viewing, sharing or editing. It consists of one or more card slots designed to fit an SD card, and a cable or interface for connecting to the computer. It is commonly used to retrieve files from portable devices such as digital cameras, PDAs, and mobile phones.
A Direct SD card reader is only slightly bigger than the SD card itself. It has an SD card slot on one end and a USB plug on the other. It connects directly to the computer instead of using a cable.
An Extension SD card reader uses a cable to connect the USB port and the SD card slot. It is slightly bigger than the Direct card reader and may accommodate two or more cards.
Reader type: Choose a multicard SD card reader if you have other types of media cards aside from the SD card, so that you can read other card types without unmounting the reader.
Interface: Choose an SD card reader with a USB 2.0 connector to ensure compatibility with several computers. Make sure it is backward-compatible so that you can use it on older USB versions as well. For faster file transfers, look for one with a FireWire interface.
