A tablet PC is a portable computer with a touchscreen or digitizing tablet. It can be operated directly on the screen using a special stylus, tablet pen, or the fingertips instead of a keyboard or mouse. It usually has a handwriting recognition function that recognizes the user’s handwriting and converts it into digital text. Most models are designed for mobile use in design and illustration, field work, and general note-taking.
A Convertible tablet PC includes a keyboard and touch pad aside from the touch screen, making it similar in form to a laptop. The screen can swivel 180 degrees and fold back into the keyboard, either face-up to use the touch screen function or facedown for storage and transport.
A Slate tablet PC does not have an integrated keyboard, using only the touch screen to enter data. It is smaller and lighter than a Convertible tablet PC, and is often used personal data assistant (PDA). It can connect to a portable keyboard, which is bought separately, using a docking station.
Gesture recognition: Choose a tablet PC with a gesture recognition capability that allows it to recognize special stylus movements on the screen to increase efficiency when writing. Make sure it can be programmed to respond in different ways to certain gestures created by the stylus.
Security: Choose a tablet PC with password protection to prevent unauthorized use and access to your files. Look for one that supports file encryption to protect your files during transfer.
