Guide to Tape Drives

Tape Drive : What is it?

tapedrive1

A tape drive copies computer files onto tape cartridges for archiving, storing rarely used files, making copies of application programs, and transferring large amounts of information between computers. A tape cartridge is a storage format that looks similar to a music cassette tape, except that it is specifically used for backing up data files on a computer. It has a long archiving stability, making it a more reliable storage device than a compact disc.

Kinds of Tape Drives include the following:

Quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) drive

A QIC drive writes on QIC tapes, which have a storage capacity of 4GB. It is the most commonly used and least expensive type of tape drive.

Travan drive

A Travan drive writes on Travan tapes, which have a storage capacity of 8GB. It can also read and write on QIC cartridges. It can store more data than a QIC drive.

Digital audio tape (DAT) drive

A DAT drive writes on DAT tapes, which have a storage capacity of 10GB. It is the fastest, most reliable, and most expensive tape drive.

Choosing Tape Drives (Buying Tips)

Interface: If you need to transfer large-volume files between two or more computers, consider an external tape drive that plugs into a peripheral port. Look for one with a USB interface for maximum compatibility, and a FireWire interface for faster transfers.

Speed: Choose a tape drive with a fast read and write speed for faster operation, especially when working with large files like videos and applications.
