Guide to Terminal Servers

Terminal Server : What is it?

terminalserver1

Terminal servers connect one or more computers to a host or server. They allow system administrators to remotely access other computers from a single terminal. They also provide a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) to operate non-capable computers. They usually connect using RS-232 serial ports for faster and more secure file transfers. Most models transmit data over SSH, Telnet, or TCP/IP protocols. They are commonly used during debugging and system rebooting.

Kinds of Terminal Servers include the following:

Single-port terminal servers

Single-port terminal servers are used for network-enabling serial communication gadgets. They have enclosures capable of mounting onto panels. They have built-in flash memory and RAM, and Fast Ethernet, Ethernet, RS-485, RS-232, RS-422, HTTP, Telnet, SNMP, and TCP/IP data link, transport/network, and remote management protocols.

Multi-port terminal servers

Multi-port terminal servers have up to 16 ports. They have all the features of single-port models, but they also include external power supplies for handling multiple terminals.
