A trackball is a specialized mouse with a rotating ball built into the side. The ball is turned using the thumb, palm, or fingers to control the cursor. It is commonly used in drawing and applications requiring great tracking precision, such as computer-aided design (CAD). It can also be used for regular computer applications.
A mechanical trackball has a wheel underneath that tracks movement and allows it to glide over the surface. The mechanical wheel has to be cleaned to keep accumulated dust from slowing it down.
Optomechanical trackball
An optomechanical trackball uses both a wheel and light sensors to track movement. Its is designed to fit into different hand types and provide maximum comfort for extended use. It usually has side buttons that function as double clicks.
Optical trackball
An optical trackball uses light trackers instead of mechanical parts to control the cursor. It does not require regular cleaning because it has no moving parts that can accumulate dirt.
Scroll wheel: Choose a trackball with a scroll wheel to allow you to navigate documents or web pages faster.
Left-hand design: If you are left-handed, choose a trackball with an inverted design to make it more comfortable. If you are sharing it with right-handed users, look for one with an ambidextrous design that can be used by both types.
