Guide to Transceivers

Transceiver : What is it?

transceiver1

Transceivers are solid-state devices that can both transmit and receive data, combining the functions of a receiver and a transmitter. They usually handle analog and digital signals using cables or wireless technology. They are commonly used in telephony, computer networks, and radio technology.

Transceivers are also popularly used in Local Area Networks (LAN) and Ethernet networks. When used to transmit radio frequency signals, they are made with two-way radios that transmit and receive signals in half-duplex mode.

Kinds of Transceivers include the following:

Network transceivers

Network transceivers transmit and receive signals in a LAN. They are normally built in the LAN’s network interface card. Some models can be built externally. These are commonly used on network systems other than LAN.

Radio frequency transceivers

Radio frequency transceivers are designed to transmit and receive radio frequency signals. They can also demodulate signals to be played or viewed in an output device. They are available in wireless and two-way models.

Fiber optic transceivers

Fiber optic transceivers use fiber optic cables to receive and transmit signals. They are usually designed to work with digital signals. The fiber optic cables can work as separate channels when arranged in parallel mode. Their transmitters and receivers are independently wired to handle two-way transmissions.

Choosing Transceivers (Buying Tips)

Network protocols: To ensure compatibility, determine the type of network protocol your network operates on (Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), AppleTalk, Ethernet, IP Telephony, ISDN, or DeviceNet) and get the transceiver appropriate for it.

Port types: Choose a transceiver with enough compatible ports for serial, Firewire, BNC, AUI, BRI, USB, S/T, and ISDN for your specific application.
