A USB drive is a portable storage device that connects to the computer’s USB port. It is one of the most popular forms of storage because of its lightweight form and almost universal compatibility. It usually has a plug and play (PnP) feature, which allows it to be used with different computers without having to install driver software.
Types Of USB Drives
Kinds of USB Drives include the following:
USB flash drive
A USB flash comes in a finger-sized case that plugs directly into the USB port. It has a capacity from 16MB to as much as 20 GB. It is very light and portable, but it usually has a slower transfer rate. It is powered directly by the USB port.
USB magnetic drive
A USB magnetic drive is similar to an external hard drive, but is housed in a separate box with a USB interface. It is larger and heavier than a flash drive, but is still portable. It has a memory ranging from 256MB to as much as 500GB, and a rotational speed ranging from 4200rpm to 10,000rpm. Some models cannot be powered by the USB port and require dual voltage power.
Choosing USB Drives (Buying Tips)
Security: Choose a USB drive with a password protection or encryption feature to keep your files from getting hacked or corrupted during transfer.
Speed: Look for a USB drive with a speed of at least 2.0 for easy and fast file transfer. First-generation flash drives are usually slow.
