A Universal Serial Bus (USB) hub allows multiple USB ports to connect to a computer while occupying only one of its ports. It consists of two or more USB ports housed in an external case. Some models are built into the keyboard or computer monitor. They are either powered by the computer or by a built-in power supply.
A bus-powered USB hub draws power from the host computer through the USB interface. It has no separate power connection. It provides limited power only and may not be suitable for high-powered devices.
Self-powered USB hub
A self-powered USB hub draws power from an external power supply, such as AC power. It can provide full power to all connected devices without using up the computer’s power supply.
Support: Choose a USB hub with a multi-transaction translator, which allows you to operate different USB devices simultaneously. This type of USB hub uses at least a 12Mbps bandwidth.
Shape: Look for a star-shaped USB hub with ports pointing into different directions to prevent the adjacent ports from being blocked when multiple devices are plugged in.
