Universal Serial Bus (USB) serial adapters connect serial devices to a computer's USB port. They allow computers lacking a serial interface to use common serial devices, such as printers, scanners, and digital cameras. They consist of a USB connector on one terminal and one or more serial connectors on the other. The serial connectors may have 9-pin or 25-pin configurations.
Single-port adapters usually come with a cable, while multiple-port ones come in a separate box. They are easy to install and can be shared between computers.
Internal adapters
Internal Adapters are small circuit boards containing one or more serial ports.
They are installed in the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) card slots inside the computer.
They usually require driver software and cannot be transferred to other computers.
Data rate: Choose a high-speed USB serial adapter with a 480 Mbps data rate. This will prevent signal degradation even when used with extension cables.
Installation: Choose a USB serial adapter with a plug-and-play installation if you will use it with more than one computer. Make sure there are no drivers required for the adapter to run.
