A Zip drive is a storage device that transfers files to and from a Zip disk. Earlier models had a capacity of 100 MB, but newer ones can have as much as 750 MB. It provides the convenience and portability of a floppy drive, but with the capacity of a hard drive. Some models are built into the computer case, while others come as a separate device.
An internal Zip drive is installed in a computer’s floppy drive bay. It usually runs on the computer’s power supply. It can run programs directly from the drive.
External Zip drive
An external Zip drive connects to the computer’s USB or FireWire port. It may be powered by the computer through the data cable or through an AC power supply.
Size types
100 MB Zip drive
A 100MB Zip drive can only support Zip disks with a storage capacity of 100MB. It is generally inexpensive and readily available.
250 MB Zip drive
A 250MB Zip drive can support Zip disks with a storage capacity of 250MB and lower. It cannot read Zip disks with a higher storage capacity.
750 MB Zip drive
A 750 MB Zip drive can support Zip disks with a storage capacity of 750MB and lower. It works with all types of Zip disks. It is flexible and convenient to use yet generally expensive.
