Guide to Car Alarm Systems

Car Alarm System : What is it?

caralarmsystem1

Car alarm systems emit high-volume sounds to alert car owners of intruders or possible theft. They usually consist of sensors placed at key points on the car, such as the doors, trunk, and hood. These sensors are wired to a sound system, which is activated when one of the sensors detects suspicious movements. Alarms may be triggered by vibrations, touching, or rough contact. Some car alarm systems are also designed to sense car tilts, which can indicate unauthorized towing. In most systems, the alarm is accompanied by deactivators that turn off the ignition and other key functions.

Kinds of Car Alarm Systems include the following:

Active Car Alarm Systems

Active car alarms are manually activated and deactivated by pressing a transmitter button to turn on the sensors. This has to be repeated every time the car is used. When the alarm goes off, it also deactivates other functions, such as the ignition, starter, and fuel circuits. They usually have limited range and are prone to false alarms.

Passive Car Alarm Systems

Passive car alarms automatically put the car in an armed mode after the engine is turned off and the doors are closed. The alarm can also turn on the vehicle’s dome light and lock the wheel jacks to prevent tire theft. They have a wider range and are less intrusive than active alarm systems.

Immobilizers

Immobilizers are activated when devices other than the car key are used to start the ignition. When triggered, they lock the starter and ignition systems. They may also lock the car doors and turn on emergency lights to stall the thief and attract attention. Most models also come with sensors that detect external contact.

Two-way Car Alarm Systems

These systems include two-way radio controllers, one installed in the vehicle and the other carried by the owner. The mobile controller can be used to sound the alarm from a remote location when the stationary controller detects theft. Some models come with an LCD screen that shows a diagram of the vehicle and the exact spot where the motion was detected.

Choosing Car Alarm Systems (Buying Tips)

Zone of protection: Choose a car alarm system with a wide sensor range if you park in a large open area. This will alert you well in advance and allow you to take quick action. If you park in a crowded area, such as a public parking lot, choose one with a smaller zone or less sensitivity to prevent accidental alarms from other vehicles.

Anti-code grabbing: Choose a car alarm with a dynamic rather than static code. This feature sets a different code each time you activate your alarm, making it impossible for thieves with code grabbers to break into the system.

Vehicle tracking: Choose a car alarm with a built-in tracking system, which sends continuous signals to a transmitter to help you locate and deactivate the vehicle when it is stolen. This will also stall the vehicle and make it easier for the police to track the thief.
