Guide to Car Amplifiers

Car Amplifier : What is it?

caramplifier1

Car amplifiers convert low-power signals received by car speakers to high-powered signals, improving their volume and sound quality. They also power the speakers from an independent source, allowing them to handle stronger signals without straining or losing clarity. Most car amplifiers work with a preamplifier, or preamp, which delivers an initial boost to very low-power signals before sending them to the amplifier.

Kinds of Car Amplifiers include the following:

Mono Car Amplifiers

Mono Car Amplifiers, also called monaural amplifiers, are used to power one speaker. They are ideal for low-frequency applications, such as playing soft or bass-heavy music. They are usually stable down to two ohms, which allows them to be wired to two four-ohm woofers connected in parallel.

Two-channel Car Amplifiers

Two-channel Car Amplifiers power two speakers, one subwoofer, or a basic speaker-subwoofer system. Some models are modified mono amplifiers with two equalizer knobs. They can usually hook up to four four-ohm subwoofers, or more if the impedance will allow.

Four-channel Car Amplifiers

Four-channel Car Amplifiers connect to four individual speakers, two subwoofers, or two speakers and one subwoofer. In most systems, they power two channels at the front and two channels at the rear. They can also operate in one- to three-channel modes.

Choosing Car Amplifiers (Buying Tips)

Bridging: Choose a car amplifier that you can “bridge,” or connect to another amplifier, to obtain a higher power output. If you are buying a four-channel amplifier, look for one with a high impedance to bridge them safely to mono or two-channel amplifiers. Mono amplifiers usually require a four-ohm impedance to work with more powerful models.

Preamp output: Choose a car amplifier with a high preamp output if you want to set up multiple amplifiers in your car. This will reduce the combined power consumption of your amplifiers and allow more even sound distribution. Make sure that at least one amplifier's preamp can send signals to another for better power efficiency.

Filters: Choose a car amplifier with low-pass filters to enhance your bass sound. This is useful if you have subwoofer systems because it will prevent them from duplicating high notes. To enhance regular and high-frequency sound, choose an amplifier with a high-pass filter to distribute bass to the subwoofers and other sounds to the speakers.
