Guide to Car CD Changers

Car CD Changer : What is it?

carcdchanger1

Car CD changers, also called multi-disc players, are used to switch between two or more audio CDs in a car’s CD player. They are composed of moving CD trays with slots for two or more discs, which feed one CD to the player at a time. They are usually mounted on the car deck and may be operated with buttons or a remote control. Newer CD changers can also read rewritable discs and modern audio formats, such as .mp3 and .wma. Most cars come with built-in CD changers, but many users opt for an aftermarket CD changer because they offer more advanced features and superior sound quality.

Kinds of Car CD Changers include the following:

External cartridge CD changers

These CD changers have one or more separate cartridges that are loaded into the changer. Each cartridge can be removed individually to load, change, or retrieve the disc. They usually hold five to 10 CDs. Six-disc models are the most common. Most models are mounted onto the boot, allowing easy access from the passenger or driver’s seat.

Internal cartridge CD changers

These CD changers have cartridges fixed inside the player. Multiple CDs are stored internally and may be retrieved through a single slot. They usually hold five to 10 CDs. They are heavier and take up more space than external cartridge changers, but are also more solid and less prone to CD shake.

Carousel CD changers

These CD changers have rotating platters, called carousels, that hold three to seven CDs. The carousel rotates to provide access to all the CDs without ejecting it from the player. Most carousels can also rotate when ejected, allowing the used to change one CD while another is playing.

CD jukeboxes

CD jukeboxes copy audio files from CDs and store them in an internal memory, eliminating the need for CD trays or cartridges. They can store up to 2,000 CDs’ worth of audio files. Most models also have a shuffle play feature, which selects and plays random songs from the memory.

Choosing Car CD Changers (Buying Tips)

Controls: Choose a remote-controlled car CD changer so that you can control the player without your hands leaving the steering wheel. Look for one with a small, simple remote control that mounts onto a cover pocket on the wheel for easy access. Also, look for a clear, high-contrast deck display that you can read from your seat.

Compatibility: Choose a car CD changer that plays a wide range of file formats. This will allow you to load customized CDs and mixes, as well as mp3 discs for larger storage. Make sure it accepts all disc types, including CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

Installation: Choose a car CD changer that you can install easily and fits properly into your car deck or boot. If you have a small car or a crowded deck, avoid carousel players because they take up more space and can get in the way when ejected. Choose a digital CD jukebox to save space and maximize storage.
