Guide to Car Speaker Enclosures

Car Speaker Enclosure : What is it?

CSEnclosures1

A car speaker enclosure is a box-type encasement that secures the speaker driver in place and prevent it from rocking or bouncing when driving on bumpy roads.  It is also designed to reduce noise, handle vibrations, and add sound interferences to the sounds produced by the driver. A car speaker enclosure is usually made of solid and durable wood.

Kinds of Car Speaker Enclosures include the following:

Sealed car speaker enclosure

  • A sealed car speaker enclosure is also known as an acoustic suspension enclosure.
  • It seals off the speaker backwave to prevent it from canceling or interfering the front wave.
  • It prevents air from getting out to maintain constant internal air pressure motion to dampen driver cone movement.
  • It commonly uses a low-sprung driver around the speaker cone.

Ported car speaker enclosure

  • A ported car speaker enclosure has a hole or a port for equalizing the pressure between the speaker's interior and exterior.
  • It increases the internal pressure when the diaphragm goes back into the speaker.
  • It augments the sound waves that travel from the speaker and increases sound efficiency.
  • It produces less accurate results than a bass reflex car speaker enclosure, as it does not give extra pressure to influence the reverberating diaphragm.

Bass reflex car speaker enclosure

  • A bass reflex car speaker enclosure is designed for moving the inward pressure outwards to supplement the forward sound waves.
  • It allows the diaphragm to make backward motions, pushing out and eliminating the sound waves from the port to boost overall sound quality and level.
  • Some models feature tubes where the backwaves are routed through.

Choosing Car Speaker Enclosures (Buying Tips)

Materials used: Choose a car speaker enclosure made of dense plywood or MDF fiberboard to reduce as much resonance as possible. To totally eliminate resonance, make sure the board is one-inch thick.

Weatherproofing:
Choose a weatherproof car speaker box enclosure to prevent it from warping or expanding from temperature changes.
