Car Subwoofer : What is it?
| A car subwoofer is an essential part of a car's sound system. It reproduces sounds in the lowest audible frequencies, making a pounding bass and deep grooves that can make the car vibrate. It makes sounds come alive better than a standard speaker, as it can produce a full range of low-frequency sounds and deep bass responses. A car subwoofer is usually installed at the center of the car trunk to evenly distribute the low-frequency sounds. |

Kinds of Car Subwoofers include the following: |
Enclosure types
Tube car subwoofer
- A tube car subwoofer has a long, cylindrical design.
- It usually has a built-in amplifier that provides excellent sound enhancement.
- It is inexpensive.
- It is ideal for creating pounding sounds but not for reproducing music.
- It is a popular choice among motorists because of its simple design and price.
- However, it creates bass sounds that are not always clean or low hitting.
Box-enclosed car subwoofer
- A box-enclosed car subwoofer features a sealed or ported enclosure that can hold one, two, or three drivers. It is also a popular choice because it is compatible with most types of woofers and amplifiers.
- It requires more effort to install than a tube model.
- It is ideal for setting up a budget or an audiophile sub hook-up.
Material types
Paper cone car subwoofer
- A paper cone car subwoofer is the most common type of car subwoofer in terms of material because it is inexpensive.
- It is excellent in enhancing sounds and producing pounds, but it also creates distorted sounds.
Aluminum car subwoofer
- The aluminum car subwoofer is a new innovation in car subwoofers.
- It is generally expensive.
- It produces clean, smooth, and high-quality sounds.
- However, with an aluminum car subwoofer, the amplifier may deliver excess power that can result to subwoofer heating. Unless the unit features an airflow cooling, this problem can easily damage the car's sound system.
- Most models have rubber surrounds around the unit's voice coils for more durability.

Amplification power: Choose a car subwoofer with an amplification power according to how much bass you want or the size of the driver. To be safe, get one with an amp power that does not exceed your driver's RMS rating. A car subwoofer with a 200-watt amp power is advisable. Do note that a car subwoofer with a very high amp power--about 1,000 watts--can break your car's windows, while one with a low amp power can create a lot of distortion.
Driver size: Choose a car subwoofer with a driver size of more than eight inches if you want a more powerful subwoofer that can hit the lowest frequencies and make your car vibrate. If you prefer cleaner and louder sounds, look for one with a driver size of 12 inches. |
