Guide to CB Radios

CB Radio : What is it?

cbradio1

CB radios (Citizens' Band Radios) are short-distance radio communication systems in the United States. They allow communication on 40 channels using a single band, usually 27 MHz. Most models can work within a short range only, making them ideal only for drivers, racers, police officers, and hobbyists whose listeners are within the vicinity.

Kinds of CB Radios include the following:

UHF CB Radios

UHF CB Radios are the most popular types of CB radios. They have a large network of operators and are easy to use. They provide noise-free operation. Most UHF radios have excellent network coverage. Therefore, they are ideal for drivers of trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles, travelers, rural property owners, hobbyists, small business owners, country police, park officers, firemen, sporting groups, and recreational marine officers.

Single Sideband CB Radios

Single Sideband CB Radios have the widest range among all the types of CB radios. They can cover thousands of kilometers in the daytime. They are available in corded or cordless radio units. Unlike UHF models, Single Sideband CB Radios operate noisily. Single sideband radios are ideal for adult hobbyists and drivers of four-wheel drive vehicles.

AM CB Radios

AM CB Radios are the cheapest types of CB radios available. They can be used by children and drivers of four-wheel drive vehicles, caravans, and trucks. AM radios only have a short range, about a few kilometers from one vehicle to another. They operate noisily.

Choosing CB Radios (Buying Tips)

RF gain: Choose a CB radio with an RF gain, a receive-only adjustment that allows you to handle and control various incoming signal strengths despite the presence of overpowering signals.

ANL feature: Look for a CB radio with an ANL or noise reduction feature to eliminate unwanted lower level noises in the surrounding airwaves. However, do note that this type of CB radio is ideal for short-distance communication only.
