A GPS map is a software used in a GPS tracking unit that serves as the backdrop for displaying the user's location in real-time in a two-dimensional, geometrically accurate representation of a three-dimensional space. It uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a person, vehicle, or any other asset the unit is attached to, recording at regular intervals. Its design allows the user to determine his distance from the destination and the direction he should take in relation to certain landmarks, streets, or places indicated in the virtual map.
A GPS base map is a simple map that provides a crude representation of space and location.
It comes free with the GPS unit. It is purchased by the manufacturer because of its low cost, which adds little to the base cost of the GPS tracking unit.
It provides adequate accuracy but may sometimes be off in the range of 1,000+ feet or more in some spots.
It is generally ROM resident, which means that it cannot be changed or updated in the field.
World map
A GPS world map is a step up from the base map in terms of detail.
It covers the entire world in a single CD-ROM, but it is still not as detailed as a standard street level map.
It is installed in a personal computer. The user selects the areas he needs and uploads them to the GPS unit.
However, it can still be out of position in the range of 1,000+ feet or more in some areas.
Metro map
A metro map is a local, street level map that provides more detail and accuracy because of its locality.
Although more accurate, it is not entirely perfect. It can still be “off the road” for more than 15 meters.
It has a 95% confidence level specification, which means the 15-meter difference can occur only 5% of the time.
Up to date map: Choose the most current GPS map available, as streets and locations can change every year.
Automatic current positioning: Choose a GPS map that offers automatic current positioning from the desired destination to make navigation and routing easier.
