Headset : What is it?
| A headset is connected to a single or a multi-line telephone used for receiving and making phone calls. Headsets look like headphones, but they come with built-in microphones that allow the user to answer calls through them without picking up the handset. They can also be connected to cell phones for hands-free use.
Headsets can be worn over the head or clipped to the ear, allowing the user to talk on the phone and do other things at the same time. They are available in active and passive noise canceling, monaural and binaural, wireless and semi-wireless, mobile, convertible, and voice recognition types. |

Kinds of Headsets include the following: |
Active noise canceling headsets
Active noise canceling headsets have microphones inside the earpieces. The microphones lower the noise levels in the background by up to 22 decibels.
Passive noise canceling headsets
Passive noise canceling headsets contain insulating materials that lower the noise levels in the background. They are less effective at lowering noise levels than active noise canceling headsets due to their lack of electronic interior microphone systems.
Monaural headsets
A typical monaural headset is made up of an earpiece for listening, a microphone for talking, and a resting earpiece. These headsets allow the user to hear the voice on the other of the line and the background sound at the same time. They have ear cushions made of foam and ear sets made of plastic or soft rubber. The single earpiece maximizes human speech sound quality.
Binaural headsets
Binaural headsets are made up of two earpieces for listening and microphones for talking. Most models have noise-canceling microphones that block out a significant amount of background noise and speech. Some have bendable, click stop booms for excellent voice transmission.
Wireless headsets
Wireless headsets offer excellent sound quality and hands-free use. They can be connected to one or multi-line phones. They usually come with battery charging indicators, on-line indicators, and battery charging slots. Some models have detachable earpieces that can be clipped on one ear.
Semi-wireless headsets
A typical semi-wireless headset is made up of a wired headset, a monaural earpiece, and a microphone. These headsets are ideal for cordless telephones. They have on-line indicators and controls for adjusting transmit volume, receiver volume, and ringer sound remote.
Voice recognition headsets
Voice recognition headsets are commonly used for communicating through computers. One earpiece is hooked to the telephone amp while the other is connected to the computer’s sound card. Their built-in noise-canceling microphones are ideal for the blind and the visually impaired, who can then listen to conversations on one earpiece and screen-read the PC software on another.
Mobile headsets
Mobile headsets use Bluetooth technology to offer superior sound quality and extended talk time. They are used for mobile-headset compatible cell phones, allowing the user to talk on the phone while doing other activities like driving.
Convertible headsets
Convertible headsets are designed for equal weight distribution over the head for maximum comfort. They can be worn over the head using ear loops and are ideal for extensive use. |

Quick call features: If you need to take calls continually, choose headsets with quick call features that allow the headband to be twisted to one side, leaving one ear free to pick up the receiver and take a call.
Noise-canceling microphone: For receiving calls in noisy environments, choose headsets with noise-canceling microphones that block environmental noise. |
