Guide to Hidden Cameras

Hidden Camera : What is it?

hiddencameras1

Hidden cameras are used to film events without the knowledge of the subjects. They are commonly used in surveillance and law enforcement to catch suspects in criminal acts. They transmit recorded video or still images to computers, television screens, or other display devices. Some types record them onto videotapes or internal memory for later viewing. Hidden cameras are usually lodged into walls or corners, or disguised as common items such as clocks, paintings, signs, and speakers.

Kinds of Hidden Cameras include the following:

Nanny cameras

  • Nanny cameras are used to monitor activities in the home when the owners are away, such as when children are left with nannies.
  • They are commonly disguised as common household items and placed in commonly inhabited places like living rooms.
  • They usually save recorded videos on removable media for later viewing.

Spy cameras

  • Spy cameras are used to record activities in residences and private places.
  • They are intended for use in law enforcement, but can also be used as nanny cams.
  • Because they are widely available, they present a privacy risk because they can be used by unauthorized people to spy on others.
  • Police car and traffic cameras
  • These hidden cameras are used to capture road violations such as speeding and drunk driving.
  • They are mounted on traffic lights or onto the dashboard of police cars.
  • Some are programmed to automatically send tickets to violators.

Public cameras

  • Public cameras are used in public places to catch criminals in action.
  • They are most commonly in shops to catch shoplifters and in parking lots to prevent theft.
  • They are normally used with other security devices like door alarms.

Choosing Hidden Cameras (Buying Tips)

Recording time: Choose a hidden camera that can record for extended hours without running out of power or recording medium. Look for one with expandable or removable memory so that you can add more storage when necessary. Make sure it can switch between battery and AC power to provide a backup in case of power failures.

Frame rate:
Choose a hidden camera with a high frame rate. Slow frame rates may not properly capture quick actions and may blur when slowed down. Look for frame rates of about 30 frames per second.
