Intercom systems allow easy communication and monitoring within a home or building. The most basic intercom circuit includes two stations or units linked to each other through a push to talk (PTT) switch. A unit consists of one or two amplifiers and a normal speaker used as a microphone and as an output device. An intercom system can be integrated in a home or commercial security system to monitor children or babies in another room and guests at the front door.
As a communication device, an intercom system is useful for people who have restricted mobility, working like the buzzers in hospitals; for communicating inside a house or a building with several floors or rooms; for making announcements in classrooms or conference rooms; and for buzzing a secretary or security personnel.
Intercom systems are also widely used in TV and stage productions. They comes with headsets that allow video or stage directors to give instructions directly to the crew.
A hardwired intercom system is installed with a wiring system usually threaded through the wall cavities. It should be installed during the construction of a house, but it can still be done in an existing home. Hardwired intercoms the clearest sound among the other types of intercom systems.
Carrier current intercom systems
An intercom system that uses carrier current is integrated into the electrical wiring of a house or building. It carries the signal along with the electricity. It has the tendency to pick up static because of its shared wiring setup. Carrier intercoms are generally less expensive than a hardwired system. Wireless intercom systems
A wireless intercom system uses radio frequency to transmit audio signals. It is the easiest intercom system to install. However, it is susceptible to interference. Wireless intercoms can also have limited range.
Video: Choose an intercom system with video capability that allows you to communicate “face to face” and to monitor a room just like a security camera. It is the ideal system to install outside your front door for monitoring your guests.
ISO function: Look for an intercom system with an isolation (ISO) function that allows you to speak privately to another user instead of broadcasting to the entire room.
