Guide to Line Conditioners

Line Conditioner : What is it?

LineConditioners1

Line conditioners, also known as power conditioners, are devices used for conditioning and regulating incoming voltages to protect computers and other electronic devices from sags, surges, and other electrical damages. However, line conditioners cannot protect these equipment during a power outage.

Line conditioners consist of a capacitor, a transformer, and other circuitry that can handle electrical problems such as low-voltage situations and brownouts. They are commonly used to filter power, bridge brownouts, suppress current and high-voltage conditions, and act as buffers between the system and the power line. They work like surge suppressors, but they are more active devices rather than passive. They continuously function, not just when a surge is present.

Kinds of Line Conditioners include the following:

Tap-switching autotransformers

  • Tap-switching autotransformers are the more common types of line conditioners.
  • They are commonly used in data, audio, and video applications.
  • They work by measuring input voltages and selecting output taps electronically to maintain constant output voltages separate from the input voltages.
  • They work with varying effectiveness and reaction time.

Isolation transformers

  • Isolation transformers protect computers from common noise, mode transients, and varying loads.
  • They provide isolated grounds, especially where service lines are not possible or available.
  • They are required to be installed by qualified electricians to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Those models that cannot provide voltage regulation are not considered true line conditioners.

Choosing Line Conditioners (Buying Tips)

Performance: To ensure quality and high performance, choose a line conditioner that combines superior inter-component isolation and high current amplifier handling ability. This type of line conditioner can effectively improve your audio and video system.

Handling: For efficiency, look for a line conditioner that can handle large audio and video systems. Choose one that can handle systems with up to 18 components.
