Marine Batterie : What is it?
| Marine batteries are the power supplies used by boats. They contain lead acid. They are made up of several plates, pure lead, and lead oxide containing 65% water electrolyte solution and 35% sulfuric acid. They provide 12 volts of power, which is enough to start and run a motored boat. They are slightly bigger than car batteries, but they function similarly. They serve as backup power supplies when electrical power or the primary battery fails. They can also be used in lightly-loaded small boats with up to two module systems. |

Kinds of Marine Batteries include the following: |
Marine cranking batteries
- Marine cranking batteries, also known as SLI or starting batteries, are designed to start boat engines.
- They are made up of several thin lead plates that look like fine, tiny foam sponges. They provide excellent energy bursting for easy and fast starting.
- They require a significant amount of current for a short time to start the engine.
- After the instant burst of energy, they tend to rest and recuperate.
- They can last for thousands of starting cycles since starting only discharges 2% to 5% of their total life.
- They overheat quickly when used in deep cycle applications.
Marine deep-cycle batteries
- Marine deep-cycle batteries are specifically designed for trolling the motor.
- They also deliver consistent power to the boat's electrical accessories.
- They are made up of fewer, thicker lead plates. They provide an excellent power output over an extended duration.
- They can also withstand high temperatures typical in heavy water currents.
- They are designed to survive several discharge cycles.
However, they do not offer much cranking power.

Leak-free: Choose a tightly sealed marine battery to prevent leaks and spills, especially during bumpy or unstable water travel. Do not get one made up of wet cells, as it comes with an unsealed container.
Stability: Choose a marine battery made of absorbed glass mat (AGM) with fiberglass dividers that hold the electrolytes in place, prevent spillage, and resist vibrations and impacts.
