Metal Detector : What is it?
| Metal detectors induce and measure electromagnetic fields to detect metal objects. Powered by batteries, they can be walk-through or handheld devices. They are available in land, underwater, and waterproof types. |

Kinds of Metal Detectors include the following: |
Land metal detectors
Land metal detectors are ideal for park, woods, and playgrounds. Some models have separate detection systems like no-motion settings that detect metal objects directly underneath the search coil. This setting eliminates the need for movement for target detection. They can also use automatic discrimination systems that turn them on to automatically search for metal objects.
Most land metal detectors are made with waterproof coils, allowing them to be used a few inches away from water.
Underwater metal detectors
Underwater metal detectors can be submersed up to 65 meters or 200 feet underwater. Some models are powered by pulse induction (PI) detectors that do not discriminate real metal targets from trash metal objects. The more expensive types are built with patented discrimination systems that differentiate between authentic and trash targets.
Waterproof metal detectors
Waterproof metal detectors are made with waterproof search coils that allow metal searching in shallow water. They are available in two types: VLF detectors that can differentiate junk metal and iron from authentic metals, and PI detectors that can search deeper but do not have discriminating functions.
Waterproof metal detectors have several detection modes for detecting all metal objects even in motion. |

LCD display: Choose a metal detector with an LCD display that allows you to identify the target and easily determine its depth.
Detection level: For a more ‘fulfilling’ search, choose a metal detector that can detect large metal objects buried up to five feet in soil or dirt.
Pulse induction detector: When searching along wet salt beaches, look for a metal detector powered by a PI detector that remains unaffected by water and salt conductivity.
Tuning features: To maximize your metal detector’s detecting capacity, choose one with adjustable sensitivity and depth levels that allow you to set its desired depth and sensitivity. |
