Guide to Minidisc Recorders

Minidisc Recorder : What is it?

Minidiscrecorders1

Minidisc recorders record data from minidiscs (MDs), a type of compressed digital format. They use a compression method called ATRAC, where the file has to be continuously compressed and decompressed during transfer. This prevents users from making exact copies of digital audio, since the file loses data during compression.

Minidisc recorders can also play music from MDs. They are very light and compact, making them ideal as portable music players. However, premastered MDs – those with music tracks recorded on them – are relatively rare. Minidisc recorders are most commonly used in field and test audio recordings.

Kinds of Minidisc Recorders include the following:

Standard minidisc recorders

  • These recorders can record onto regular MDs with capacities of 140 megabytes.
  • They can record between 60 to 80 minutes of music, depending on the type of compression used.
  • They usually have digital-to-analog converters that can read data from analog sources.

HiMD minidisk recorders

  • These minidisk recorders are designed to record on HiMD discs, which have a capacity of about one gigabyte.
  • They can also compress data on standard minidiscs, increasing their capacities up to 300 MB.
  • Newer models can also record in PCM format, the kind used with modern audio CDs.

Choosing Minidisc Recorders (Buying Tips)

Buffer: Choose a minidisc recorder with a buffer rate over 10 seconds. This will ensure a smooth transfer, especially when you record on high-speed discs. It will also help increase your recorder’s battery life because it stops the spindle motor when the speed exceeds its capacity.

Tracking and TOC: If you are using a multitrack MD, make sure your minidisc recorder supports multitrack recording. For single-track  MDs, look for one with a table of contents (TOC) feature to allow easier playback on the finished recording.
