Minidisc recorders record data from minidiscs (MDs), a type of compressed digital format. They use a compression method called ATRAC, where the file has to be continuously compressed and decompressed during transfer. This prevents users from making exact copies of digital audio, since the file loses data during compression.
Minidisc recorders can also play music from MDs. They are very light and compact, making them ideal as portable music players. However, premastered MDs – those with music tracks recorded on them – are relatively rare. Minidisc recorders are most commonly used in field and test audio recordings.
Buffer: Choose a minidisc recorder with a buffer rate over 10 seconds. This will ensure a smooth transfer, especially when you record on high-speed discs. It will also help increase your recorder’s battery life because it stops the spindle motor when the speed exceeds its capacity.
Tracking and TOC: If you are using a multitrack MD, make sure your minidisc recorder supports multitrack recording. For single-track MDs, look for one with a table of contents (TOC) feature to allow easier playback on the finished recording.
