Guide to Pagers

Pager : What is it?

pager1

A pager is a portable, wireless device that allows a person to send and receive messages to another person. Pagers have small display screens where the phone number or text message is shown. A regular pager is small enough to be clipped to a belt, or put in a pocket or purse. It is a necessary tool for people who are always on call (like doctor and lawyers).

Pagers require the assistance of a service provider to send and receive pages. Every pager unit has a corresponding number where the operator or a system transfers the message. Once transferred, the pager beeps or vibrates to inform the user of a new page. It runs the message across the screen when activated.

Kinds of Pagers include the following:

Numeric pagers

A Numeric pager can display numbers only. It can indicate a telephone number or a number code that corresponds to a specific message. For example, “22” means call the office while “11” means the user has a voicemail.

Alpha-Numeric pagers

An alpha-Numeric pager can display both numbers and letters. It is capable of displaying a short message. A variant of the alphaNumeric pagers is the voice pager, which can display letters and numbers as well as play a short voice message.

Two-way pagers

A Two-way pager can receive messages and send back replies. It usually comes with a complete keyboard for keying in the reply. Two-way pagers can have advanced features such as e-mail handling, word processing software, and data management.

Choosing Pagers (Buying Tips)

Alert: Choose a pager with a silent vibrating function that allows you to be alerted of new messages without disturbing other people in the vicinity with its standard, loud beeping sound. This feature is very useful when in meetings, theaters, or hospitals.

Memory: Choose a pager that lets you store 30 or more messages for future reference.

Time and date stamp: For easy referencing, look for a pager with a time and date stamp that informs you of the time and date a particular message was received.

Voicemail: Choose a pager with a voicemail capability that allows you to receive short voice messages.
