PDA Keyboard : What is it?
| PDA keyboards allow users to operate PDAs using standard keyboards. They are usually small and portable, and can either be folded or rolled up. They have thin, flexible bottoms designed to be used on flat surfaces. A basic PDA keyboard includes number, character, and function keys, sometimes with PDA-specific keys like a sleep or operating system key. Most models also have special keys with double or triple functions, allowing for fewer keys and a more compact layout. |

Kinds of PDA Keyboards include the following: |
Plug-in PDA keyboards
- Plug-in PDA keyboards plug into a connection port on the PDA.
- They usually connect at the base, where the PDA normally connects to computers or other PDAs.
- Because they use the PDA’s main port, they block out much of the PDA’s connectivity, including external power.
- A PDA dock or cradle holds the PDA upright, so that the user faces the screen while typing.
- They are usually made for specific models and have to be replaced when the PDA is upgraded.
Infrared PDA keyboards
- Infrared PDA keyboards use Infrared light beams instead of wires to connect to the PDA.
- They usually include a small stand to hold the PDA upright, which features an Infrared port for interacting with the keyboard.
- They are powered by small alkaline batteries. A single AAA battery can keep an Infrared keyboard running for several hundred hours
- They work on all PDA models and require no drivers or software to install.
- They are prone to physical interference, so the path of the beam must be kept clear to maintain the connection.
Bluetooth PDA keyboards
- Bluetooth PDA keyboards connect to the PDA using Bluetooth technology.
- They can bypass physical barriers and have a connection range of up to 10 meters.
- They offer fast connection and more consistent interaction with the PDA.

Power consumption: Choose a PDA keyboard that runs on minimum power. Avoid those with bright keyboard lights and sounds because they use up battery power. Look for one with light sensors that automatically turn off the key lights when there is sufficient ambient light to work with.
Universal connectivity: Choose a PDA keyboard that requires no drivers or software installers. For wired keyboards, look for one that uses common ports such as USB and FireWire. This will allow you to use the keyboards with more than one device, including laptops and tablet PCs. |
