Portable projectors are designed to be carried to different venues and connect to different sources. They are commonly used for mobile presentations or outdoor displays. They may be wireless or connected to portable sources, such as laptops or PDAs. Their brightness ranges from 800 to 2500 ANSI lumens, which is much darker compared to the 2500 to 5000 range in larger projectors.
Kinds of Portable Projectors include the following:
Liquid crystal display (LCD) portable projectors
LCD portable projectors work by projecting light through three color panels producing the primary colors, red, reen, and blue. Older models called TFTs used transistor-controlled cells, but newer ones use polysilicon LCDs. They usually produce more vibrant colors and shaprer images than DLP projectors.
Digital light processing (DLP) portable projectors
DLP portable projectors have semiconductor panels consisting of tiny mirrors, each representing an image pixel. Each mirror adjusts to a specific angle to reflect the exact amount of light required by each pixel. They produce higher contrast and deeper blacks than LCD projectors.
Brightness: Choose a portable projector with over 1000 ANSI lumens to accurately display color images. Recommended ratings are 1000 to 2000 for mobile presentations, 2000 to 4000 for large rooms, and 5000 or higher for auditoriums.
Lamp life: Choose a portable projector with a low-watt lamp to prevent overheating and prolong its shelf life. Look for LED or halogen lamps, which are much whiter and cooler than ordinary light bulbs.
